Our History

SWAN Advocacy Network was set up in 1999 to offer and promote an independent issue-based advocacy service for adults living within Salisbury District. We now offer independent advocacy to adults that live in the whole of Wiltshire (except Swindon) since this time the organisation has continued to grow in both stature and reputation and in 2003 became an independent registered charity. We now have two offices, one in Salisbury and one in Devizes.

In 2007 SWAN was commissioned by Wiltshire County Council to become the Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) provider for the local authority. At the same time Wiltshire County Council and Wiltshire Primary Care Trust also commissioned SWAN to extend advocacy services to all areas of Wiltshire (excluding Swindon).

In 2009 SWAN received the contract from Wiltshire County Council to provide advocacy in Wiltshire for the next three years, with the option to tender for a further two years. This has been excellent news for everyone that is involved with SWAN, this is also good news for our service users and it means we can carry on providing the excellent and much needed service in Wiltshire.
